Chanel has great icons: the Chanel #5 perfume, the 2.55 bag, the two-tone shoes, the camellias and of course the Chanel J12 high-end watch.
21 years ago this watch came to leave an indelible mark not only on this French fashion house but on the entire world of watchmaking.
But what’s so special about this watch, we’ll give you the details….
The challenging design of the Chanel J12 high-end watch.
One of the most striking aspects of the Chanel J12 watch in its early days was its concept of unifying the male and female gender in a single piece.
They managed to break the schemes, being the pioneers in moving away from the classification of ladies’ watches or men’s watches by proposing this model that captivated both genders equally.
A black ceramic sports watch.
In 2000 Chanel opted for the first black ceramic watch and three years later the Chanel J12 white watch was born to complete a perfect duality.
Although ceramics was not an unexplored material for the world of watchmaking, it was “la maison” who bet firmly on ceramic watches.
So much so that in addition to its traditional aesthetics, this material became an indivisible part of the Chanel J12 watches in its different versions.
Inspiration comes from a sailboat.
Jacques Helleu is the mastermind behind this high-end watch, the artistic director of the maison Chanel was inspired by the silhouette of a sailboat participating in the America’s Cup.
Specifically the sailboats known as J12, the rest of his inspiration came from racing cars that he found highly attractive because of their shape.
The J12 is a timeless, sporty, yet elegant model with the unique shine of this material, which is also highly scratch resistant.
Evolution of the chanel j12 watch.
In 2005, the Chanel J12 Superleggera watch was launched, a chronograph with a bi-compax configuration with an aluminum bezel and central links of the bracelet.
What appeared to be a challenge to the original DNA of the J12 has not been reproduced to date, although the model did maintain other codes such as the unidirectional rotating bezel, the 200 m water resistance and the automatic mechanical movement.
That same year the J12 Tourbillon was unveiled and in 2007 the Chanel J12 GMT watch that shows a medium complication: the GMT function.
A year later (2008), they launched the Chanel J12 Calibre 3125 watch, which has a movement truly worthy of haute horlogerie.
It is thecaliber 3125 derived from the famous Audemars Piguet 3120 and is achieved thanks to a collaboration between Chanel and AP.
In 2009 comes the J12 Noir Intense, which was issued in a fairly limited edition of only 5 pieces, in 2010 we get the Chanel J12 Marine and the Rétrograde Mystérieuse.
New color in a Chanel J12 watch.
A change of color emerges with the Chanel J12 Chromatic watch in 2011 with infinite possible graduations of gray, which emanates a lovely metallic sheen from using titanium ceramic.
Precious stones arrive with the J12 Moonphase version: available in white ceramic, black ceramic and others with diamond setting.
In 2014 we can observe a transgression to the traditional codes with the Chanel J12 G10 watch that has a strap with a common NATO system for military use and that contrasts with the setting of diamonds on its bezel and on the pins of the strap.
That same year and in 2015 the house delights us with the Chanel J12 Tourbillon Volant, Chanel J12 Tourbillon Volant Squelette, exquisite models of haute horlogerie.
From then on, the evolution is constant until reaching Chanel J12-20, Chanel J12-20 Email, Chanel J12 Paradoxe and Chanel Madeimoselle J12 Acte II whose protagonist is Coco Chanel.
