The Qualities of the Omega Speedmaster

This chronograph watch manufactured by the Swiss watchmaker Omega has enormous prestige, product of durability, precision and timeless design.

The Speedmaster was conceived in 1957 as a sports and racing chronograph, but it really gained worldwide prestige in 1965.

It was in that year that the model was selected by the U.S. space agency NASA for use on all manned space missions.

So that in the history of the watchmaking world it was baptized as “the first watch that was used on the moon”.

In fact, astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore an Omega Speedmaster Professional on his wrist during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

Omega Speedmaster Today.

Currently the Speedmaster is the favorite among the models of the Omega collection and although during its life it has undergone a series of variations, it continues to maintain its essence.

The watch has:

  • Chronograph function with three sub-dials to measure time.
  • Tachymeter scale to calculate speed.
  • Stainless steel case with leather bracelet or strap.

As for the movement, it is always of high quality, such as the hand-wound Caliber 1861 and the Co-Axial Caliber 9300.

What is the Price of the Omega Speedmaster?

Within the Omega Speedmaster collection there are different models, including limited editions.

For this reason, Speedmaster prices range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars.

Its price will be defined by the complexity of the watch, the materials used in its manufacture and, of course, by its particular characteristics.

A reference to its wreck…

An Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch could cost between $5,000 and $8,000, but the limited edition Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Edition can go for more than $20,000.

However, Speedmaster chronograph models with extra features, such as those with the GMT display or other complications, may have higher prices.

These prices are only for reference purposes because they fluctuate for various reasons, including availability and market demand.

In the case of second-hand watches , the condition of the watch also has to be taken into account.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch.

Known as the “Moonwatch” for its feat of having been to the moon, but really its name is the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

It is one of the most emblematic and popular models of the brand and as a curious fact it was originally designed in the 1950s as a high precision racing watch.

It stands out for its classic and elegant design, stainless steel case 42 mm in diameter, the characteristic black dial with luminous indexes and three chronograph sub-dials.

Other details include a tachymeter scale, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet.

The
Omega 1861 manual-winding caliber
the movement that accompanies the Omega, is an improved version of the movement used in the original version of the watch used in space.

Water resistance of up to 50 meters is another valued quality of this model,

Omega Speedmaster Automatic

It is the variant of the Omega Speedmaster, but unlike the traditional one it carries an automatic movement instead of the manual movement.

The Omega Speedmaster Automatic watch was not designed to reach space, and although it does not have the same fame, it still enjoys recognition and has its followers.

As for its design, it is similar to the Moonwatch, has a 42 mm stainless steel case, black dial with luminous indexes and three chronograph subdials.

It is accompanied by the tachymeter scale and a resistant sapphire crystal to avoid scratches, it really keeps the essence of the model that inspires it only that it does not carry a manual movement.

It is equipped with the Omega automatic caliber 3304, which has a power reserve of 48 hours.

It should be noted that the Speedmaster Automatic is available in a variety of models and designs and the two options remain with stainless steel bracelet or a leather strap.

There is also a choice of variants with different colored chronograph subdials.

Omega Speedmaster Reduced.

It is the smaller brother of the line, the smaller and lighter variant of the famed Speedmaster Professional.

This time it has been designed with a 38 mm diameter stainless steel case, making it significantly smaller than the 42 mm Speedmaster Professional.

It has a shorter and thinner stainless steel strap, so it may be more comfortable, especially for those with smaller wrists.

It does not abandon the black dial with luminous indexes and the three chronograph sub-dials.

Omega Tradition.

In addition to being the first watch to land on the moon, Omega has been associated with several important sporting events over the years.

The brand has been the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games since the 1930s, it is for this reason that several Olympic Games commemorative watches have been created by this manufacture.

In turn, the manufacture also has watches specially designed for specific sports, such as sailing, golf and skiing.
